Inspiring Artists with the world's oldest dance, Raqs Sharqi
Sarah L. Mayne
Owner/Founder of BellyDanceGR, Ambrosia Theater and Director for Delkash Dancers Performance Troupe
"As long as I can remember, I have loved dance. From a very young age I began dancing in classical styles and I've had the pleasure of studying danced jazz, tap, ballet, swing, ballroom and Latin style. When I was first introduced to Middle Eastern Dance in 1999, I made it my life mission to learn as much about this art form as possible.
In 2003, I began instructing my first class to personal friends, as a way for all of us to get together and share movement. As the community grew and local venues began to contact me for performances so in 2005 I formed the Delkash Dancers Performance Troupe and began my pioneering commitment to MidEastern dance in the West Michigan area. There is nothing that brings me a greater sense of connectedness to my community, to myself and with my body than dancing this beautiful art form. Middle Eastern Dance (Raks Sharki) has brought me health, mental stability, joy, freedom and the privilege of working with the thousands of women I have met through the years.
I’ve performed around 2,500 times on stages across America, Canada and Europe. I’ve had the pleasure of sharing those stages with the finest MidEastern Dance scholars of our time. Artists such as Yasmina Ramzy, Morocco, Hossam & Serena Ramzy, Artemis, Tayyar, Mona Habibi, Kaeshi, Rachel Brice, Zoe Jakes and many more. I am a director and choreographer with over 300 produced shows, including BellyDance nights at San Chez Café & Cabaret, and now more than 5 years at the Shiraz Grille.
I dance because I have to. I will dance forever, and if I’m very lucky, I will dance with you..."
